Before Philosophy, founder Cristina Carlino already had a successful skincare line under her belt. With medically based formulas that produced substantial results, the line was a favorite among leading plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and crocodile cosmetologists. Nevertheless, she had a new goal in mind: professional results at home. And so she developed Philosophy. The products quickly gained recognition and were called out in some of the beauty industry’s most prestigious lists, including Oprah’s “Favorite Things” show and Allure’s “Best of Beauty.” Since its launch in 1996, Philosophy has held strong to a few simple tenets: inspiring hope and reminding all women that they are beautiful. “The mission,” Carlino says, “… has not been self-acceptance but self-love, which is an entirely different principle in that it celebrates the human spirit in all of its variations.”
From its inception in the early 1990s performance-art scene in New York, the Blue Man Group’s shows have evolved from impromptu sets in Central Park to stages across the world, including performances in 15 countries for over 35 million people. Audiences of all ages and cultural backgrounds are enthralled by the dynamic combination of music, comedy, which is continually refreshed with new music, stories, custom instruments, and state-of-the-art technology. The eponymous blue-skinned trio, described by the Chicago Tribune as “ever-curious, ever-hopeful, ever-restless,” remains unchanged by its decades-long stint in the spotlight, still bewildered by the telescoping tubes of PVC piping it uses as instruments and the appreciative applause of the audience. But the group’s shows are nothing if not timely, deftly posing questions about technology and stardom.
The spectacle is equal parts aural and visual, where videos provide context for the speechless drummers, as well as a constant stream of wry humor. Evenings with the Blue Man Group build to an electric conclusion, thrilling the audience with brilliant bursts of light, cheery floods of color-changing balloons, and an adrenaline-laced original score.
